Centrosomes are important for chromosome segregation during cell division and in the formation of cilia and flagella. Without centrosomes, chromosomes would not segregate properly to each daughter cell during division, giving rise to aneuploidy, a condition that causes diseases such as cancer. Furthermore, cilia would not form leading to many pathologies including polycystic kidney disease. The goal of our work is to understand how centrosome duplicate, grow and participate in the formation of mitotic spindles and cilia. This work will lead to a better understanding of centrosome biogenesis and how centrosome defects can lead to cancer formation and cilia-related diseases.
