Cells use molecules and proteins as 'signals' to relay important information regarding cell division, differentiation and growth. When normal processes go awry, cells move towards uncontrolled growth and migrations--often times leading to human diseases such as cancer, neurological and heart disorders and infectious diseases. Dr. Ikuras lab investigates the 3D structures of important proteins involved in signal transmission as it pertains to human diseases. Research into protein structure and protein interactions will help design new therapeutics that enhance or stop biological process. These strategies can be developed to specifically target pathways promoting tumour progression, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
