American Society for Clinical Pathology
By leveraging leap frog technology and the skills and experience of American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) members, clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa can have access to quality real-time cancer diagnostics, allowing them to detect cancers and subsequently treat patients more quickly.  ASCP and our partners are developing and administering an economical, scalable, secure, and reliable cloud-based infrastructure and telemedicine platform to disseminate diagnostic results to local clinicians.  Local clinicians are able to access the results with 24 to 72 hours, communicate them where needed, and implement patient management.  The cloud technology utilized in the approach provides seamless interaction, management, and secure access to pathology and laboratory clinical multimedia, including digital whole slide images.  ASCP is currently working with our partners in Botswana to test the use of a digital pathology image management system for the diagnosis of five medical cases. ASCP is drawing upon its 8,000 anatomic pathologist members to provide diagnostic services and its 91,000 laboratory professional members to provide support and training to laboratory professionals on the ground. The ASCP-led coalition was formed in response to a call to action issued by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The group is also a recognized Commitment to Action by the Clinton Global Initiative.
